Robot Dog Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Robot Dog
Start with how you will actually use it
Most disappointment with robot dogs comes from buying for the wrong job. The models in our catalog fall into three groups:
Play and companionship. You want interaction out of the box: conversation, following, tricks and expressive behaviour. Look at the KEYi Loona (a wheeled companion) and the Unitree Go2 Air or Go2 Pro (walking robot dogs).
STEM and coding. You want to build, program and learn. Look at the SunFounder PiDog and Petoi Bittle X kits, and the ROS platforms PuppyPi Pro and DOGZILLA S2.
Research and professional work. You need an official SDK, specific sensors or payload capacity. Look at the Unitree Go2 EDU, DEEP Robotics Lite3, and the professional quadrupeds and humanoids, which we quote per configuration.
Walking, wheeled, or wheel-leg?
“Robot dog” covers three different machines. A walking quadruped (Go2, PiDog, Bittle X) steps over small obstacles and looks and moves like an animal, but is slower and costs more. A wheeled companion (Loona) is faster and quieter indoors, needs no gait control, and cannot climb steps — it is not a quadruped, and we say so on its page. A wheel-leg hybrid (Go2-W) rolls on flat ground and steps when it must. Choose by the floors and terrain the robot will actually meet.
Ready to run, or a kit?
A ready-to-run robot (Go2 family, Loona) works the day it arrives. A kit (PiDog, Bittle X) is a building project: check what is inside before comparing prices. The PiDog, for example, needs your own Raspberry Pi and a microSD card — the board is not in the box. Our guide “What Is Included in a Robot Dog Kit” lists the contents of the main kits side by side.
App control is not programming
Many robots advertise “programmable” because you can arrange actions in an app. That is graphical action editing, not software development. If you want to write code against the robot, you need official SDK access — and on the Go2 family that exists only on the EDU version. The Go2 Pro, despite being the flagship consumer model, has no official SDK. The same pattern repeats on humanoids: the base Unitree G1 and AgiBot X2 do not support secondary development. Every product page here states the development position in its first lines.
Size, runtime and where it will live
A full-size Go2 weighs about 15 kg with its battery and runs roughly 1–2 hours per charge (2–4 hours with the long-life battery); a Bittle X is palm-sized and walks for about an hour. Manufacturer runtimes are measured under the maker’s own test conditions, so treat them as comparisons between models, not promises for your floor, payload and temperature.
The real total cost
The product price is only part of what you pay. Robots with large lithium batteries travel as dangerous-goods freight, and shipping a 15 kg robot across the world costs real money; import duties depend on your destination. That is why PupRobot confirms the final total — product, shipping, and duties where DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is available for your destination — by email before you pay anything. When you compare stores, compare landed totals, not headline prices. Our guide “Robot Dog Shipping Costs and Delivery” explains what drives the freight cost.
Warranty questions to ask any seller
Who provides the warranty — the manufacturer or the retailer? For how long, on which version? Where does the robot go for repair, and who pays that freight? On our product pages the warranty line names the manufacturer’s terms for that model (for example, 6 months on the Go2 Air and 12 months on the Go2 Pro), and we confirm the coverage for your configuration before payment.
Quick picks by use case
- Home companion, no assembly: KEYi Loona — or a Go2 Air if you want it to walk.
- Family flagship with follow and voice features: Unitree Go2 Pro.
- Learn to code on a budget: SunFounder PiDog (bring your own Raspberry Pi) or Petoi Bittle X (self-contained).
- Learn ROS with LiDAR navigation: PuppyPi Pro or DOGZILLA S2 (Raspberry Pi 5 version).
- Development platform: Unitree Go2 EDU — quoted per configuration.
- Professional inspection or research: DEEP Robotics Lite3, Unitree B2 or DEEP Robotics X30 Pro — quoted per project.
Three questions we hear often
Do I need to know programming to enjoy a robot dog? No — ready-to-run models are controlled by app, remote and voice. Programming only matters for kits and EDU platforms.
Which is better, Loona or a Go2? They do different jobs: Loona is a wheeled companion for interaction; the Go2 is a walking machine. Choose by movement, not by price.
Can I return it if I choose wrong? Talk to us before ordering — we confirm the configuration and package in writing before payment, which prevents most wrong purchases. If something arrives defective, the manufacturer-warranty process described on the product page applies.
